International Women's Day

8 March is International Women’s Day , a global day to celebrate the achievements of women past, present and future but also to highlight the specific challenges that women face around the world.

Oxfam and the White Ribbon Alliance are using the day to draw the world’s attention to the problem of deaths among pregnant women in the developing world.

It is important that we are reminded of the plight of women around the world. I have spent a large part of my working life helping international projects for the Commonwealth - an organisation that promotes respect and equality for women around the world.

I hope that days like these will increase the awareness of these problems among people in developed countries, making it impossible for the international community to ignore the many women around the world who are suffering unnecessarily.”
