Time to end Suffolk's safe seats

We face an unprecedented crisis in the legitimacy of Parliament.

Last Thursday, Sir Thomas Legg, the auditor charged with addressing the MPs’ expenses scandal, called for 389 MPs to repay £1.3m. On Friday, we learned that three Labour MPs and one Tory peer will face criminal charges over their expenses.

Under the current unfair electoral system, Suffolk Coastal is considered a “safe seat” for the Tories. But “safe seats” are one of the root causes of the scandal.

What we need is healthy competition – where every candidate has to fight for every vote. With John Gummer standing down, the residents of Suffolk Coastal will get to choose a new person to represent them.

I’m pleased to be the Lib Dem candidate bringing the fight home. As I have been knocking on doors and asking voters what worries them, the Liberal Democrat’s “four steps to a fairer Britain” resonates well – we promise to deliver fairer taxes; a new fair start for all children at school; a rebalanced, green economy; and clean, open politics. This time, every vote will count. But only votes for the Liberal Democrats will deliver a fairer, greener, and more prosperous Britain.
